Hand with Dripping Paint
This project had the added challenge of drawing the hand in the foreshortened position. Students worked from photos of their own hand or resource material. They selected colors from the color theory lesson to create the dripping paint. Tonal drawing and Watercolor Paints. |
Water Patterns- Abstract Painting- Self Expression
Students studied photos of water patterns and reflections. They created their own design using pencil, and acrylic paints. Class lesson on creating art from natural elements; layering paints; attention to broken reflections; colors, tones, water movement, and patterns. Students were encouraged to reflect on their on self expression, and learn more about themselves through their art.
Mannequin Emphasis
Students posed a class mannequin, and studied the proportions carefully. They created a composition that would emphasize the mannequin by creating an imaginative background. Working from observation skills including learning to glance back and forth from subject to drawing . Materials: Ebony Pencils; Watercolors; Colored Pencils |
Self Portrait Wearing Hat- Watercolor
Students were introduced to fine art examples of portrait paintings with the subjects wearing a hat. Photos were taken of students wearing a hat they brought from home. They made drawings from their photos, and finished with watercolors.
Lesson Goals: seeing the hat and head as one shape; noticing any shadow on the face created from the rim of the hat; blending skin tones with watercolor paints; layering from light to dark; ways of injecting ones personality into a self portrait. Proportions of the face and head.

Students were asked to create stacks of rocks, books, or colorful cups playing with balance and teetering contrast resulting in an interesting composition. Lesson goals: Creating emphasis by using dark background and increased intensity in object color. Light source and shadows. Lost and found edges in painting. Blending a dark to light background. Watercolor techniques and brush control.
Self- Portrait Cubism Box- Tonal Drawing from Observation
Students created a portrait box, by studying their features in a mirror, and drawing them in each box. Photos were taken of their ears so they could see them better. The lesson included understanding the anatomy of each feature, ( bridge, ball, and nostrils of the nose) and how to create a realistic 3D illusion through shading. Finished 2D drawing and printed 3D Cube.
